Guidelines for a Safe Yoga Practice

The following guidelines will help you create a safe and fulfilling yoga and meditation practice. The guidelines will also introduce you to how our yoga studio and healing center tries to create a welcoming, sacred space that our members, instructors and owners can mutually share together.

Studio Etiquette

  • Please arrive at least 5 minutes before class begins, and inform the yoga instructor in the rare case that you have to leave early. Arriving early time reflects a courtesy to your teacher and classmates, and allows you to maximize the benefits of your yoga practice. If you arrive late and an opening meditation is in process, either wait outside or sit quietly by the door until the meditation is over. When the meditation is over, then quietly enter in the back of the room, so you do not disturb the class.

  • New students should arrive at least 10 minutes early in order to complete a health information form and to familiarize yourself with the yoga studio.

  • Inform the yoga instructor about any physical injuries, conditions, health concerns, recent surgeries, or if you are pregnant. 

  • Your yoga attire or clothing should be comfortable and allow for easy movement. Yoga is normally practiced with bare feet. Shoes are not worn in studios for sanitary reasons and to protect the floor. In addition, removing your shoes is also a symbolic gesture of leaving the outside world (and all associated thought processes) at the door.

  • Please refrain from wearing strong scents such as perfumes, cologne, essential oils, etc.), as they can be disturbing to some students. If you are likely to sweat, please wear deodorant. Avoid wearing body lotion as it can make with the mats slippery and unsafe.

  • Try to come to class well hydrated. Drinking water prior to class prevents dehydration and increases flexibility. Drinking enough water well in advance decreases the likelihood that you'll have to interrupt your practice by going to the restroom. Of course, if needed bring water for proper hydration during class.

  • It is best to practice yoga on an empty stomach (about two hours after your last meal). If you do eat something within two hours of practicing, try to keep it light and easy to digest (examples: yogurt or fruit). Eating heavy foods before practicing can lead to nausea and/or discomfort.

  • If you bring your cell phone into the yoga studio, make sure that it is on silent before the class begins. This is considered to be good yoga etiquette. If you are a medical practitioner and are on call, set your phone to low volume or vibrate and be sure to notify the teacher in advance that your cell may go off.

  • By nature, yoga studios are considered a space for reflection, self-study, and focus, and maintaining a quiet atmosphere supports this frame of mind. Our yoga studio (especially the "Rahini Rainbow Room" or classroom) is quiet and meditative, do your best to keep it that way by refraining from chitchat or gossip. It’s not only polite, but it’s beneficial to your own state of mind.

  • Please leave any personal items not needed for class in the front area, and not the classroom. 

  • Studio yoga mats, blankets and props are available for use, or for purchase.

Physical Practice

  • Always speak to your doctor before you begin any new yoga class, or if you have any medical limitations, concerns or questions.

  • To ensure a safe and enjoyable yoga experience, check the class descriptions before attending a class. If you are uncertain if the class is right for you, speak to the owners. Basic level classes are beneficial for every student, regardless of how long they have been practicing or their level of proficiency in other movement forms (dance, sports, martial arts, etc.).

  • Stretch or move within your zone of comfort; do not force or strain. Listen to your body and what it needs at the moment, which could vary day to day. It is the student’s responsibility to inform the instructor if they experience any unusual pain or sensations during class.

  • Yoga practice is about bringing your awareness to your body and breath. True success is about your inner state of wellness and the connection of your body, mind and breath, not about being more flexible than the person next to you.

  • Breathe normally, or naturally, anytime you feel you need to. Do not hold your breath, especially if it is uncomfortable or if your doctor advised you not to.

  • For women: In the case of pregnancy, please notify the yoga instructor before you begin class. Forward bending, backward bending, inverted poses and twists may need to be modified or avoided during pregnancy. Yoga's relaxation is beneficial, but stretching must be adapted to the pregnancy condition. If you are pregnant, please seek your physician's approval. During menstruation, inverted poses (for example: shoulder stand) are to be modified due to the shift of blood flow in the body that may disturb the natural process of the body. Also, any position which causes undue strain on the urogenital diaphragm should be discontinued.

  • Many of our yoga instructors like to give (offer) gentle assists or adjusts in class, like guiding you deeper into a pose or shifting your position to correct misalignment. If you’re sore, injured or just don’t feel like being touched, tell the yoga instructor before class begins.

  • If you can's stay for Savasana, sit in the back of the classroom, near to the door, and depart very quietly. Please be aware that many of your fellow classmates live for Savasana, and by packing up and shuffling out during the most meditative and restful stage of the entire class, you’re possibly disrupting everyone else and denying yourself the wonderful benefits this pose has to offer.

  • After practice, be sure you clean up bolsters, blankets, blocks and straps you may have used. If you’re borrowing the studio’s props, be sure to return them to their rightful place upon leaving. Also, be sure to take any personal belongings with you, as we are not responsible for them. Leaving your space as clean as you found it is respectful to the studio and students in later classes.

  • At the end of class after relaxation and meditation, please respect this meditative state by keeping conversations at a quiet level or engage in conversation outside the yoga studio.
